GreenTech: leveraging technology to power an energy revolution
At its current rate of consumption, humanity needs 1.7 planets a year. Global sustainability now being a mainstream topic, we need to accelerate the change to reduce our carbon footprint. COP 21 framed the challenge, and as COP 23 is about to start in Bonn, we strive for a greater global commitment to secure the earth’s future for the next generation.
It is encouraging to see how energy efficiency and the lowering costs of clean energy are shaping the path to the energy transition. We are witnessing enormous progress in performance on wind power generation and we are convinced of the capability of solar power to acquire a significant share of the world electricity production. We are also noticing new efficient ways to produce energy: the process of evaporating water, for example, could power almost 70% of the US electricity needs. Transitioning to clean energies is critical. Despite this effort, many of the climate scenarios developed by the UN intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) predict that even with renewable energies, we will not be able to reach our goal of keeping global warming under 2°C.
We need a true energy revolution where we would not only slow our CO2 emissions, but also remove carbon from the atmosphere and turn the tide. We need negative emissions (carbon removal technologies) in addition to our climate change mitigation strategies. Such technologies do exist but are still pilots projects. In Iceland, in a geothermal power plant, a startup managed to create the first true negative carbon emissions system, through direct air capture and conversion of the gas into stones. And this is only one illustration of carbon removal application. At L’Atelier BNP Paribas, we believe that there are early stage technologies that, if well supported, could bring exponential benefits to complement the quest for an increasing smaller environmental footprint. We think that bringing these innovations to the world’s attention and contributing to this conversation with startups, investors, corporates, academics can help achieve such a feat.
At L’Atelier BNP Paribas, our mission is to help the bank and its clients identify new uses of disruptive technologies. We analyse those trends to understand their societal impact cross-industries. Our 39 years of innovation expertise from Paris to Shanghai and San Francisco lead us to strongly believe that technology is a powerful tool to address societal issues. In our work on Smart Cities, we have been watching the increase in demand for clean and sustainable solutions, and the rise of innovative and efficient technologies, coming from all regions of the world. Alongside BNP Paribas’ engagement in energy transition, we are reinforcing our focus on GreenTech, as we are scouting and analysing the development of clean technological solutions.
L’Atelier’s Greentech initiatives aim at gathering a community of experts, public and private actors, as well as individuals, with one common objective: ideating and developing disruptive technologies to accelerate an energy revolution.
We will leverage our global presence in San Francisco, Paris and Shanghai to:
- Create a network of GreenTech experts, opinion leaders and sponsors ;
- Produce relevant content, ease informational flows and exchanges around GreenTech topics ;
- Support the development of carefully selected GreenTech initiatives to help them accelerate and scale.
